What are “bare metal” servers?

IBM has started renting bare metal servers by the hour, but what exactly are bare metal servers and how do they differ from “regular” servers?

Bare metal servers are an alternative cloud solution to virtualization. They are servers that are fully dedicated to your tasks and not virtualized, which minimizes performance degradation. However, they still offer the benefits of provisioning and scalability that are associated with the cloud model. Bare metal server allow tasks that were not previously suitable for the cloud to now be performed without suffering from a decrease in performance.
