What is a “custom recovery?”

Often when I’m reading articles about rooting Android devices, there is a reference to a “custom recovery.” What is a custom recovery and what does it do?

Just to add to what JimLynch said, a custom recovery is a must for rooted android devices. It should allow you to do a nandroid backup to create a "save point" for your device. This is especially important if you flash a lot of ROMS. Trust me, it's just a matter of time until you screw it up, and you want to be able to go back to a pre-screwed up state. It's a lot cheaper than a new phone or tablet.

[Android] What is a Custom Recovery & Why Should I Have One?

"Custom Recoveries perform the same tasks as the stock-Android recovery with a few additional features, such as the ability to make full system backups, and flash custom roms.

It is important to note that custom recoveries are recommended to those users with rooted devices, however a rooted device is not required. Anyone with an unlocked bootloader can install a custom recovery on their device."
