How to make Resident Shield active in AVG Anti-virus?

Resident Shield, which provides most of the anti-virus function of AVG outside of scanning, switched off on my laptop and I get a message that says “Warning: Your computer is not fully protected! Resident Shield is not active.” I can’t figure out how to turn it back on. Obviously, I’ve tried to turn in back on, both using “click to fix it” that accompanied the warning message and manually toggling it off/on. No effect either way. Any idea how to get it back on?

The AVG Support Center might be of help to you:

You are probably going to have to uninstall and reinstall the software. Make sure to use the AVG removal tool, don’t just go into your control panel and click uninstall; that will not fully uninstall it. After you run AVG Remover, reinstall the software and make sure it’s updated. I don’t know what causes this, but it seems to happen with AVG from time to time. There is a link to the removal tool on the AVG website on this page
