Can I start a new career in software without a degree in computers? Which certifications pay off?

I am in my 30's, and I want to start a new career. My questions are intentionally broad, since I want to get several viewpoints as to what my options are. I am comfortable with PC's and the internet, and have very basic HTML knowledge. I am a musician and artist.

You might want to check Dice, Monster, and Simply Hired to see what jobs related to software are available. Check the qualifications for them, then you'll have an idea of what you need to learn based on what's happening in the job market right now.

My first thought upon seeing that you have an interest in art and music was that website design might be something you would like to pursue. You certainly would need to brush up on your HTML and would need to become familiar with javascript, Flash, etc. It would give you a creative outlet and your existing artistic abilities could be put to use.
