What benefits will result from the FCC opening up additional wireless spectrum?

I saw a headline today that the FCC is opening up additional wireless spectrum. Will this have any impact on the average consumer or business?

The FCC decision opens up an additional 100MHz for 5GHz WiFi use. This might not sound like a lot, but 5GHz WiFi is only allowed to occupy part of the 5GHz spectrum and this is approximately a 15% increase, so this move will allow higher speeds for more users. It essentially lessens a bottleneck that compromises 5GHz WiFi performance. Not all devices currently in use can utilize 5GHz WiFi, but as it becomes more and more of an expected standard, the average user should see a increase in speed on these networks.
