Will Facebook’s purchase of Oculus damage the Oculus brand?

I know, I know - how much of a “brand” does Oculus have at this stage. They only have the Rift VR headset in development, not one consumer unit has been sold, nor will it for a while. True, but with Oculus Rift, I have been planning to plunk down my hard earned and try it out. Traditional transaction. Upon hearing that Facebook was acquiring them, my first thought was, “I am NOT going to let Facebook see what I do with a VR headset.” Facebook is a company that monetizes me, not one that makes killer hardware. What do others think? Would you still buy an Oculus Rift with Facebook behind it?


I loathe Facebook, so I wouldn't touch Oculus with a ten foot pole. And I'm sure there are plenty of other people who feel the same way. See my column about "Why you should delete your Facebook account" and you'll know why I detest Facebook. Ugh.


I’ll buy one about as soon as I buy a Facebook phone. In other words, never. Yes, it will hurt the Oculus brand, in fact it already has. There are many, many people who supported the Oculus Rift kickstarter campaign that are not pleased to have funded a business for Facebook to acquire. In addition, one of the first follow ups to the announcement of Facebook’s acquisition was the Tweeted announcement by Markus Persson that the Minecraft version for the Rift was cancelled. In his words, “We were in talks about bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus. I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out.”


Developers have seen what working with Facebook is like, and most of them want no part of it. As for me...no thanks, Facebook Oculus, I will wait on the Sony VR headset to read production.
