What is the best way to connect to a laptop when tethering?

I often have to use my smartphone as a hotspot to tether my laptop when I’m out of the office. Is it better to tether via WiFi or Bluetooth?

Tether Your Phone Over Bluetooth For Less Battery Drain

"We've talked a lot about how to tether your smartphone's internet connection to your laptop, and you often have a choice between tethering over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB. It turns out, there's a bigger difference between them than you might expect. "

I suggest a third choice that you didn’t mention - a USB connection. It’s going to about as fast as WiFi, and it is also going to keep your phone from discharging while being used as a hotspot. On the other hand, if you are on an unplugged laptop, it is going to be charging your phone from your laptop battery. As for WiFi or Bluetooth, I would go with WiFi is battery life was not a concern, due to faster throughput. However, if battery life is an issue, Bluetooth uses far less power to broadcast.
