How to send money over Gmail?

Is there a way to send money to someone directly over Gmail? If so, what is the process for doing so? I read an article about a new service that “competes with Gmail’s money transfer service.” I had no idea that such a service exists, assuming the article was accurate. It would seem that an integrated way to combine email communication and financial transactions in one step would be more widely known.

Send and receive money with Gmail and Google Wallet

"Google Wallet is integrated with Gmail, so you can quickly and securely send money to friends and family directly within Gmail. Whether you’re chipping in for lunch or reimbursing your roommate for your share of the rent, paying back your friends is as simple as sending an email."

Yes, you can send money over Gmail. You have to establish a Google Wallet account, but then it is pretty straightforward. The recipient also has to verify their identity with Google before they can receive money. I would love to know how much this service gets used. I actually have everything setup, but have not actually sent money using Gmail, so I can’t give a review of the service. Here is additional info from Google is you want to try it out.
