What is application performance management?

What is application performance management and what are the KPIs I must keep in mind in when researching a tool to help manage enterprise apps - from a security as well as user expectation perspective. Thanks!

Application performance management
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_performance_management

"In the fields of information technology and systems management, application performance management (APM), is the monitoring and managing of performance and availability of software applications. APM strives to detect and diagnose application performance problems to maintain an expected level of service. APM is the translation of IT metrics into business meaning (i.e. value).[1]"

Application performance management is merely the monitoring and management of software apps in terms of availability and performance.

As far as key performance indicators (KPIs), there are all kinds of them. This article on LinkedIn lists 75 across several categories, including financial performance, understanding your customers, gauging your market and marketing efforts, operational performance, and employee performance.

This article by an HP software executive cites seven key KPIs for IT organizations, including "change success rate," "percent of emergency changes," and "percent of SLAs met."
